Desflurane is a fluorinated gas anesthetic that acts faster than others because it moves quickly into and out of the body, leading to rapid induction and wake-up. Its strong smell makes it unsuitable for starting anesthesia with a mask, as it can irritate airways. Desflurane is ideal for obese patients and outpatient surgeries where quick recovery is key. It calms the brain and slows breathing based on the dose, while keeping heart rate and blood pressure fairly stable at typical levels. A special heated vaporizer is needed due to its unique properties.
