Ketorolac is a potent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with significant analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is the only NSAID available in IV/IM formulations for short-term management of moderate to severe acute pain. Ketorolac provides opioid-level analgesia without respiratory depression or addiction potential, making it valuable for postoperative pain. Its use is limited to 5 days maximum due to significant risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and renal impairment. Ketorolac is particularly effective for pain with significant inflammatory components (e.g., orthopedic surgery, renal colic). The drug reversibly inhibits platelet function via COX-1 inhibition.
